Hi Coaches!

With the arrival of Debby it’s officially hurricane season for me here in Florida. For everyone who is dealing with the storm, please stay safe!

I recently had the opportunity to be a guest on a podcast run by friend and colleague Podge O’Conner, where we talk about my experiences in explaining what the coaching alliance is to people who are new to coaching. The Podgecast can be found on all major platforms and my guest episode will be released this Friday. I hope you’ll check it out!

As always, thanks for being here.

Industry Chatter

  1. A recent report was published by Coherent Market Insights: Health Coach Market Size and Share Analysis - Growth Trends and Forecasts (2024-2031). Here are some key takeaways:

    • The health coaching market is growing at a steady rate and is expected to show a compound annual growth rate of 7%.

    • North America currently dominates the market, however the Asia Pacific region is expected to witness fast growth.

    • The lack of standardized certification and regulatory practices can hamper market growth due to ambiguity around required qualifications, skills, and expertise of health coaches.

    • Customized programs and personalized coaching, coupled with a digital approach, offer significant growth opportunity. "According to a survey conducted among 15,000 adults across 30 countries by WHO, 75% people were willing to pay more for healthcare services tailored to their unique medical history and genetics.”

    • Nutrition coaching is estimated to contribute to the highest market share, followed by exercise and fitness, lifestyle coaching, weight management, chronic conditions, and stress management.

    • Includes a list of key players in the industry including digital health companies and coach education companies.

  2. The UK & International Health Coaching Association, launching a campaign for advancing professionalism in health coaching, has announced its Register for Health Coaches to be launched in September 2024.

  3. Peterson Health Technology released it’s assessment on Virtual Musculoskeletal (MSK) Solutions which provides more information about the companies operating in this space and includes, among other interventions, the role of coaching.

Data Bytes

Today’s data snippet takes a look at the prevalence of the NBC-HWC credential in our job listings. As always, remember this data is only for jobs listed in the newsletter.

  • Only about a quarter of health coaching jobs mention the credential. This does not include jobs that also have clinical licensure requirements. While some of those jobs mention the NBC-HWC, they are minimal.

  • 6% of jobs require either the NBC-HWC or another credential like ICF certification or a degree.

  • 9% of jobs prefer candidates have the credential.

  • 11% of jobs require the credential.

  • A handful (anecdotally) of those jobs that do require or prefer the credential will also consider completion of an NBHWC approved program, indicating that a coach who is currently working on their credential may also be considered.

  • What types of credentials make up the other 74%? Degrees, clinical licenses, or ‘certified health coach’ without specifics for what that means. More data to come on these in a future newsletter.

What amount of autonomy will we have for coaching versus a program agenda or company agenda?”

I received this question from our last survey about what coaches would ask a recruiter or hiring manager. It's an excellent question and important to ask during the hiring process or even before applying if you can connect with a coach currently in the role you're interested in. The answer will vary by company and role.

In digital health, you may need to coach to a specific program, especially if the company sells products (like an app) accompanied by coaching or follows a specific approach to care. Examples include Noom and Virta. Conversely, companies like Spring Health and BetterUp may have an app to accompany their care offerings but the service is the primary product, often giving you more autonomy.

Outside digital health if working directly with a medical provider you may see similar trends. The provider could be looking for someone to coach to their propriety program, or an autonomous coach as a partner within the practice. If you have specific needs or values as a coach when it comes to autonomy, keep this question in mind during the job search.

Big thanks so everyone who has responded to the survey. One of the most common questions has essentially been, “How can I stand out in my resume and application in such a competitive field?”

If you have any other questions about the job application process for coaching roles, please complete the survey below. Your input is greatly appreciated to help inform my meetings with recruiters and hiring managers, so that I can get the answers you need!
