Industry Chatter & Data

  1. DPP & NBHWC: Many NBC-HWCs also serve as Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) Lifestyle Coaches, or program facilitators. It’s important to distinguish between the DPP and NBHWC in the work of health coaches, especially since DPP programs can receive Medicare funding. Created by the CDC in 2010, the DPP has strict application and reporting requirements for programs and coaches. You can be both an NBC-HWC and a DPP Lifestyle Coach, but as separate entities they have separate training and maintenance requirements. Also, to operate as a DPP Lifestyle Coach, you must work with a CDC recognized program. Starting and running a recognized program requires a rigorous application, maintenance, and reporting process for the life of the program. For NBC-HWCs interested in specializing in diabetes care and working with a DPP program, the DPP Lifestyle Coach certification could be a valuable addition and there are are several NBHWC approved CE providers for this training.

  2. The Productization of Coaching: Many coach job descriptions in the digital health space emphasize integrating specific coaching products, such as apps delivering programs, into the coaching process. Start-ups often expect coaches to engage with members using these apps and provide feedback for improvements. This requires more than just comfort with remote technologies; it involves explicitly using tech products to supplement coaching. Coaches are uniquely positioned to leverage their expertise in human behavior change to work cross-functionally, providing valuable feedback to improve the customer experience. This also means that a company’s focus on selling a product in conjunction with coaching could impact the way your coaching looks - you may also be expected to do some level of customer education, service, or tech support.

If you don’t have this kind of experience, start by examining the tech products you use daily and consider them from the customer perspective. You can even do this with apps from a company you might apply to if they are commercially available. This approach can help you differentiate yourself in the networking, application and interview process to meet the needs of digital health companies.

  3. Some Data: I’ve been conducting an in-depth analysis of the job descriptions curated so far. It’s a time intensive process and I’ll share data over time. One significant deciding factor for many coaches when seeking a job is the time commitment—whether the position is full-time or part-time, and also the number of hours. Here are some numbers for you.

I guess 15% of employers just don’t find it important to specify these things. 🙄

So far, there's limited data available on the hour requirements for part-time roles, which can vary widely from 5 to 35 hours per week. Most I see are around the 20-hour mark, with fewer at the lower and higher ends. For coaches looking for just a few hours a week, I suggest also specifically searching for contract roles. These may offer flexibility with your schedule, even if they don’t explicitly state "part-time" in the description. Take this data with a grain of salt, as it only captures remote roles that we have curated over the past two months.

Please be aware that there are individuals and entities perpetuating scams by fraudulently misrepresenting themselves as  companies and recruiters. We also link to other job sites which we do not control or operate. We urge you to exercise caution in your job search and to not give out personal information before doing your own research.
