Health Coaching Jobs Newsletter #9

September 27, 2024

Hi Coaches!

Hurricane Helene ravaged the southeast U.S. this past week and while myself and my family in Florida are OK, I know many who are not. My heart goes out to anyone who was affected. I understand from first hand experience the devastation storms like these brings, and I’m sending you strength. If you or someone you know has been affected, you can find resources to recover from the disaster at USA.gov and FEMA.gov.

Also, our last issue, Deep Dive - Ask A Recruiter, focusing on optimizing your chances in the job application process, was a big hit…and I made a small but critical typo in stating, “There are far more jobs than there are coaches…” (despite having re-read that article at least ten times before publishing). Clearly it’s the opposite. Our brains are wired for shortcuts. 🤣

Thank you for being here,

Leslie

Industry Chatter

  1. Emerging Niches: Entrepreneurship is still an essential need in our industry to support the widespread adoption of health and wellness coaching. These are some examples of some emerging niches and creative ideas to draw inspiration from.

Bond Vet, a company in the veterinary space that supports both pet owners and veterinary professionals, is offering a new mental health program in partnership with a board certified coach designed to enhance mental well-being for veterinary professionals through therapeutic lifestyle interventions (Lifestyle Medicine) to support resilience, clarity, and psychological wellbeing.

Aon, a business consultancy firm, published an article, “5 Ways to Address Health and Wellbeing in the Transportation Industry” that explicitly suggests companies should consider offering virtual wellness coaching to employees as a form of preventative care. The significance here is several-fold; Businesses are increasingly seeing the value of health and wellness coaching for supporting their employees. Also, the transportation industry appears to be an untapped area of opportunity for health and wellness coaches. Corporate wellness in general is a quickly growing space for HWCs and there are plenty of ways to niche down for coaches who are interested in branching off into entrepreneurship.

In the UK, a Life coach is offering free life coaching at a cafe for women who need mental health support. What’s significant about this is that the coach has a long background in the hospitality industry and is using that to her advantage in growing her coaching practice.

  2. GLP-1 News: There’s a lot going on in the world of GLP-1s the past couple of weeks. With the launch of its GLP-1 Med Program, Noom is loudly advocating for affordable medication prices in light of the Senate’s inquiry into Novo Nordisk. A number of variables overall are likely to drive down the cost of GLP-1s in the coming years. Cheaper meds means more people taking meds, which means more people who will need lifestyle and behavioral support to maintain their progress and taper off the medication.

GLP-1s in the health and wellness coaching space are a divisive topic, but the opportunity for health and wellness coaches is clear - these medications are not going away, and we have the potential to be able to help a lot of people. Beyond some of the larger players in digital health who are attempting to meet this need (Noom, Omada, Hims & Hers), check out Terra Health Coaching as an up and coming player that emphasizes coaching as an essential piece of support for people taking GLP-1s.

  3. The Professionalization of Exercise: The American College of Sports Medicine’s recent issue details ongoing efforts to increase the integration of fitness and exercise professionals into the medical community (apologies for the paywall - 3 of the articles are free to read), taking learnings from the health and wellness coaching profession’s efforts towards healthcare recognition. This trend is especially relevant for health and wellness coaches who are exercise professionals to any degree, or those who want to be. I anticipate some health coaching jobs will also start to follow this trend, requiring certified exercise professional credentials particularly in areas like musculoskeletal support such as this job at Health Joy.

This week’s Community bulletin focuses on two essential aspects of growing a career in health coaching regardless of your path - entrepreneurial skills and relationship building.

Coach Spotlight

Amber Peterson is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach with an extensive background in coaching, wellness education, and coaching business operations. She recently co-founded ‘Giving Wellness’, a company that offers wellness programming and coaching to businesses for their employees . What makes this program unique is Giving Wellness’ partnership with Midwest Foodbank Pennsylvania.

From the press release, “This 8-week program delivers a triple benefit to employers, employees, and Midwest Food Bank Pennsylvania—access to professional and personal
health and fitness coaching to achieve a healthier you, build a healthier workplace, create a sense of community with team participation, and make a community investment with a percentage of every GIVING WELLNESS 8-week program donated to Midwest Food Bank Pennsylvania.”

Amber had the opportunity to speak at the press conference to officially launch Giving Wellness on National Women’s Health and Fitness Day, September 25th, at the Harrisburg, PA State Capitol.

I hope you’ll join me in connecting with Amber on LinkedIn and congratulating her on this incredible step forward in spreading recognition and awareness of health coaching.
