Health Coaching Jobs Newsletter #8

September 16, 2024

Hi Coaches!

I’ve been meeting with a lot of you recently and have had a few instances of getting on a video call with a new coach who didn’t realize the person they had connected with on Facebook or LinkedIn was the very same person writing this to you right now. “Oh! You’re that Leslie!” And I realized - I haven’t actually properly introduced myself 🤣

I’m Leslie Wier-Fincher, health coach living in Florida with my husband and Corgi. I won’t go into all of the details of my resume (you can find that on LinkedIn), but I’ve been coaching for about 7 years in digital health, I am a coaching psychology nerd, a passionate educator, and I love to learn new things. When I’m not growing in my career, you can find me studying Japanese, practicing Ikebana (traditional Japanese flower arrangement), reading, playing video games, knitting, strength training, and hiking. I am truly a multipotentialite and as I approach my 40th birthday this year, I’m finally embracing it.

I’m also starting a business. More to come on that in future newsletters!

Thank you for being here,

Leslie

What’s New/Reminders

  • Not much new this week, but we’ve got some exciting things in the pipeline!

Industry Chatter

  1. Health Coaching in Education is gaining traction and we are seeing a number of different solutions emerging from grant funded programs at the K-12 level, to external care providers and internal wellbeing programs at the University level.

Preventia, a virtual care solution, has recently partnered with NFL Alum Marlin Jackson’s Fight For Life Foundation to support teacher mental health and wellbeing for the next two academic years through behavioral health and mental health coaching.

TimelyCare came across my Twitter feed (I refuse to call it X) recently, and they employ both student success coaches and health coaches in HigherEd. It just so happens they’re hiring a student success coach now - check it out in the listings.

Emory University has also launched a coaching program for student wellbeing, free to all students at the university. Check it out to read a bit more about the backgrounds of the program’s first health coaches.

  2. Coach Apps at the VA: it’s no secret the VA is a huge advocate of health coaching as a part of it’s Whole Health System model of collaborative practice. It’s interesting to see they have also developed an AI Powered Health Coach. It uses the principle of nudges to increase patient engagement while still offering access to a care team when needed. It’s unclear whether that care team consists of a human health coach. They’ve also developed a Pain Coach App to support veterans in managing chronic pain, with a variety of features and interactive tools including check-ins, a journal, pain assessments and support resources. Whether you are for or against AI and technology enhanced behavioral health, both of these apps increase access to care for Veterans, which is something I can get behind.

  3. MSK & Menopause Care in Digital Health: Hinge Health, a virtual MSK clinic that also offers lifestyle coaching as an intervention, is partnering with Midi Health to support women experiencing menopause. This speaks to a larger trend in healthcare focusing on holistic menopause support given that Menopause is a significant driver of healthcare costs.

Kaia Health and Sword Health are other big players offering MSK solutions. However while Kaia does offer coaching as a part of its solution, Sword actually explicitly states members are supported only by DPTs, “never health coaches” - an interesting juxtaposition. Musculoskeletal care is one of the top healthcare costs for employers, so I expect to see continued growth in this sector. Hinge’s move to diversify and meet different healthcare needs adjacent to the MSK space is a calculated one, addressing two big and interrelated trends.
