Health Coaching Jobs Newsletter #7
September 3, 2024
Hi Coaches!
I hope you had an excellent Labor Day holiday. While it’s still pretty hot here in Southwest Florida through November, at least the Autumn trends are out again and that always puts a perk in my step (Pumpkin Spice is Ok. Maple is way better.)
In our first Deep Dive issue y’all showed an overwhelming interest in learning more about Mental Health coaching, so I am knee deep in informational interviews over the next few weeks to bring light to the current trends. If you have experience in the Mental Health coaching space, I’d love to chat!
I appreciate you,
Leslie
What’s New
I’m excited to announce our first Featured Job listing! If you’re an employer and want to feature a job, please email us.
Our Data Bytes section is going to be an intermittent feature, simply because the data entry and analysis of job descriptions is rather time consuming. I’m considering some other ways I can use the data I have from close to 200 HWC job descriptions (and counting), so know this is in the back of my mind.
Industry Chatter
On her website Wellness Law, Barbara Zabawa offers an updated look at the question, ‘Can Health and Wellness Coaches Bill Medicare?’ The TL;DR Version: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) want to see more scientific research involving HWC and the Medicare population, and this is why the established CPT codes are have not been made permanent. Currently, only licensed healthcare professionals can bill Medicare for telehealth health and wellness coaching services. So, if you’re not a HWC that also has a state-issued license for a recognized health profession, then you are not eligible to receive payment from Medicare for HWC services. I highly recommend reading the whole thing- it helps fill in the gaps around the current reimbursement question for HWCs, along with the article shared in our last issue, ‘Health & Wellness Coaching Services: Making the Case for Reimbursement.’
The NBHWC (and quite a few NBC-HWCs it looks like!) was recently in attendance at the Annual Wellness Summit held by WELCOA, the Wellness Council of America, from August 26-29 in Chicago. This event brings together the professional wellness community to, “provide attendees with strategies, connections and resources needed to advance well-being for themselves, their workplaces and communities, and the individuals they serve.” The 2025 Conference will be jointly held by WELCOA and the National Wellness Institute (NWI) in Austin, Texas from August 18-21, 2025.
WELCOA is a professional organization with the mission to “improve employee well-being and create healthier organizational cultures.” So, if you’re particularly interested in workplace wellness or health coaching in the workplace on your HWC career path, WELCOA may be a good resource for you. While investment in digital health has cooled since the pandemic, Spring Health recently raised $100 million in funding. In the investing space, Spring is what is known as a unicorn - a privately held start-up valued at over $1 billion (in this case, $3.3 billion). So, what does all of this mean for coaches? Spring is a comprehensive mental health solution for employers and health plans offering therapy and coaching, and it has a substantial coach network of NBHWC and ICF credential holders. While they are not currently hiring coaches, it’s a company to keep an eye on as it continues to grow and expand access to mental healthcare.

Q&A
I came across a great question in a health coach oriented Facebook group recently that is worth expanding on here.
How can you get into educating health coaches for a university or program like Wellcoaches? How can you break into this area of our field?
The first thing to know is the NBHWC has specific requirements for instructors of approved programs. For content areas 1, 2, and 4, at least 48 hours must be delivered by an NBC-HWC, 48 hours by faculty with at least 200 hours of coaching practice, and 15 hours by faculty with either a master’s degree in a health and wellness-related field or a bachelor’s degree and a license in a nationally recognized health and wellness field. For content area 3, at least 12 hours must be delivered by faculty with these same degree qualifications.
If you're interested in teaching for an approved program, meeting these criteria will make you a strong candidate. That’s not to say you can’t get a foot in the door without them, but as programs must fulfill these requirements, they’ll be actively looking for instructors who do also.
A program’s context can also influence ease of entry. University positions are notoriously competitive across the board, and faculty positions usually require previous experience teaching adults or at the university level. Relationship building will be an asset here, especially if you lack experience. I emphasize this over simply networking as crucial, because you’ll really need to nurture those connections over time.
You may also consider volunteering for a program or CEU provider, or offering your own courses or CEUs to gain initial experience. You could also reach out to CEU providers which offer monthly subscriptions that include CEUs. Since they need to fill ongoing CEU commitments, they may be open to considering a proposal.
If you lack a background in teaching or training, upskilling in this area is important if you’re serious about pursuing coach education on your HWC career path. The Educational/CEU market for coaches is saturated with offerings that vary in quality. To stand out, a strong foundation in educational theory and teaching skills is essential. While your coaching skills will be valuable as an educator, they differ from teaching and training skills.
