  • Things are starting to look a little different around here. We recently migrated the newsletter from Mailchimp to Beehiiv and I’m excited about the possibilities the new platform will bring. Pardon our dust!

Industry Chatter

  1. GLP-1 Bonanza: GLP-1s are gaining popularity, and digital health companies are taking notice. Companies like Omada, Vida, and Noom are offering specialized GLP-1 support programs that combine behavior change support, tailored education, and clinical care with GLP-1 medications for obesity treatment - including health coaching. There is a clear need for behavioral health and lifestyle change support in this niche, and health coaches are well positioned to meet that need.

  2. Community Health Work: Although not yet a widespread trend in coaching, there is a growing connection between Community Health Work and health coaching. A company called Active Care is combining behavioral health coaching with community health work to enhance clients' self-efficacy. Many community health work jobs share skills with coaching, such as Motivational Interviewing, active listening, empathy, and behavior change expertise. Most of these jobs are location-specific, requiring service to a particular community. If you're interested, search for opportunities in your area.

Questions & Feedback

Email us or complete the survey found in each newsletter with your questions and suggestions. Thank you to everyone who has reached out!

I recently connected with one of our subscribers, Martha, in a mutual Facebook group. She asked, “I am constantly looking at part-time coaching jobs and notice many require cognitive behavioral therapy. Are there CEs that cover this?”

A quick look at the NBHWC-approved CEs shows a few programs. Eating Freely offers an Emotional Eating & Binge Eating Disorder Specialist Training that includes education on multiple CBT-based tools. Best Possible Self Institute provides a Coaching for Cognitive Vitality & Wellbeing program, also ICF CE approved, that trains in Cognitive Behavioral Coaching. Elias Institute of Professional Coaching offers a Stress Management & Resilience Coach Certification (also ICF approved) grounded in CBT and other evidence-based techniques.

Motivational Interviewing, CBT/CBC and an understanding of behavior change/behavioral science are among the most commonly mentioned areas of coaching specific expertise required in recent listings.

What does this mean for you? Consider pursuing continuing education in this area, especially in a competitive job market. Be fully versed in the difference between CBT (cognitive behavioral techniques applied in a therapeutic context) versus CBC (applied in a coaching context). I recommend using the term CBC rather than CBT, as it's not within a coach’s scope to offer therapy. In an industry where many are still confused about what coaching is, it's important to maintain a clear distinction between the two. I have only seen one job so far mention CBC as opposed to CBT, so you may even need to do some educating with employers.
