Hi Coaches!
I can’t believe it’s already mid-February - my how time flies! This month has been rather eventful for me so far with a case of the shingles this past week. Thankfully I’m starting to feel human again.
I came across something interesting in a job posting recently, likely in response to the recent political climate and discourse around DEIB. Take a look at the “Meritocratic Disclaimer” on this listing - it’s the first time I’ve seen a statement like this. You can see that it attempts to meld the typical ‘diversity disclaimer’ with a statement on meritocracy. Generally speaking I don’t think these types of disclaimers are always necessarily indicative of actual hiring processes that promote either diversity or, in this case, meritocracy and are just a way for employers to cover their rear ends, but it’s an interesting shift nonetheless and I’ll be interested to see what trends come to the world of work as a result of recent political changes.
In other news, I’m starting to see more listings posted and then removed before I can post them in the next newsletter, and am considering adding a ‘just jobs’ listing on off weeks. Would two additional emails per month with just jobs be too much for your inbox? Let me know.
With Gratitude,
Leslie

Should you get your ICF Credential as a Health & Wellness Coach?
For those who are unfamiliar with the ICF, it is the gold standard credential for coaching (not just health and wellness coaching) as a field globally. As an NBC-HWC and an ICF PCC, I receive this question often. The short answer is: it depends. Let’s dive into the long answer.
I find it helpful to conceptualize Health and Wellness Coaching as an umbrella encompassing several subcategories. This framework can be useful for understanding our professional development as health and wellness coaches, though I’m not certain it fully captures the breadth of the HWC field. Feel free to poke holes in this perspective. However with this structure in mind, it will be easier to answer the question at hand.
Health Coaching
This subcategory leans more toward the clinical side of coaching. While you don’t necessarily need a clinical background, you’re likely working within a clinical setting, such as a hospital or clinic, or receiving referrals from a physician. You may also work in a digital health clinic.
Your clients are typically under the supervision of a licensed health professional, and your role as a coach is to help them implement medical recommendations. This could involve supporting clients with diabetes management, cardiac recovery, or musculoskeletal health. In addition to fostering healthy lifestyle habits, you may assist with medication management and help clients navigate the complexities of their condition to improve their overall well-being.
Health and Wellness Coaching
In this category, your work may still involve some clinical elements but leans more toward overall wellness also. Your clients may or may not be under the care of a licensed health professional. Your focus is on helping them establish healthy habits to achieve better health outcomes, often with a more preventative approach.
You take a holistic view of well-being, addressing multiple aspects of health. You might work in digital health, as a DPP lifestyle coach or serve as a Community Health Worker.
Wellness & Life Coaching
Here, your approach to wellness expands beyond physical health to include broader aspects of life, such as work and relationships. For example, you may work with a client experiencing situational anxiety due to career uncertainty, integrating wellness and career coaching.
You recognize that personal and professional goals are deeply connected to health. One session might focus on a healthy habit to support work performance, while another explores career development to manage stress. In this category, personal and professional well-being are not separate from physical and mental health.
Niche-Specific Coaching (that isn’t clinical)
This category includes specialized areas outside of traditional health coaching, such as ADHD coaching, executive and leadership wellness coaching, student wellness and success, and other niche areas.
Credential Considerations
You may find yourself fitting into multiple categories. Historically I’ve worked in the “Health & Wellness” and “Wellness & Life” categories. The NBC-HWC credential is relevant across all of these contexts, but as you move further from clinical health toward wellness and niche-specific coaching, the ICF credential becomes more relevant.
In corporate environments, such as executive and leadership coaching, the ICF credential is widely recognized. Executive wellness is an emerging niche, and an ICF credential may enhance credibility and open doors in these settings that aren’t as familiar with the NBHWC. Some niches, like ADHD coaching and student wellness, tend to consider both the ICF and NBC-HWC credentials.
It’s important to note that the NBHWC was created by leaders in the coaching field who felt that the ICF’s competencies were not fully sufficient for Health and Wellness Coaching. As a result, the NBHWC expanded upon them. This means that if you want to work specifically in health and wellness coaching, the NBC-HWC credential is the best foundation, with the ICF credential as a possible supplement that may provide additional opportunities depending on where and how you want to work. If you know you want to work in a clinic or hospital with patients, the ICF is unlikely to be relevant for you in the current industry. If you want to work in student or corporate wellness, it’s generally not required but may provide an edge. As the industry continues to evolve, this basic framework may lose relevance, especially as health and wellness coaching niches expand and enter different sectors in creative ways.
With all of this said, additional credentials do not replace real-world experience. Many newer coaches pursue more education or certifications when they struggle to find work, believing it will make them more marketable. In reality, what makes you more attractive to employers is hands-on experience.
