Health Coaching Jobs Newsletter #15

January 6, 2025

Happy New Year Coaches!

I hope you had a warm, safe, and happy holiday season, and are feeling rejuvenated for the new year. After some much needed time off, I’m back and ready to go with our first newsletter of the year!

My word of focus for this year is “Expansion”. So, I decided to quit my full time benefitted job as a coach in digital health to move fully into freelance coaching. It’s kind of scary to be honest, but with this change I’ll also be able to dedicate more time and energy to growing this newsletter and offering greater resources and support for our community’s professional development. To that end, thank you to everyone who completed the survey I sent in December. The survey is still open! Your feedback is invaluable in helping me to make decisions and prioritize changes according to your needs.

I have been critically considering ways to fund the newsletter moving forward in a way that also keeps the content accessible. Many coaches have expressed a desire to support my work financially, so I’ve created a tip jar for anyone who is interested and able. I pay out of my own money in operating and hosting fees, and any contribution would be greatly appreciated.

Also - we reached over 1,000 subscribers in December, in large part due to your efforts to share the newsletter. Thank you so, so much.

With immense gratitude,

Leslie

NBHWC Competency Update

Over the past year, the NBHWC has worked diligently to update the core competencies for health coaching, aligning them with the evolving needs of our field. These competencies serve as the blueprint for NBHWC-approved coach education programs. As coaching has expanded the competencies have evolved to address diverse coaching situations and environments, enabling greater inclusivity and adaptability in coaching practice to meet the needs of different coaches and client populations. This months long effort was informed by a wide range of coaches and experts from medicine, academia, and various industries, ensuring a well-rounded perspective.

The new competencies place a stronger focus on whole health, emphasizing structural and social determinants of health. Four content areas have expanded to five:

  1. Coaching Presence, Relationships, and Sessions

  2. Theories, Models, and Approaches to Behavior Change

  3. Skills, Tools, and Strategies

  4. Ethics and Professional Practice

  5. Health and Wellness.

Below is a brief overview of how each section adds new emphasis and expands on the previous competencies:

  1. Coaching Presence, Relationships, and Sessions

New emphasis is added on cultural humility, inclusive coaching practices, and addressing power dynamics and microaggressions. There is also a new section on coach self-awareness and self-regulation. The competencies are expanded to inviting feedback, using culturally appropriate communication, and considering access issues during session preparation. There is also expansion within the the detailed subsections for session structure.

  1. Theories, Models, and Approaches to Behavior Change

This has been expanded to cover Motivational Interviewing 4.0 including the spirit, tasks, and distinctions between change and sustain talk. Growth Mindset and Appreciative Inquiry have also been added as new theoretical frameworks.

  1. Skills, Tools, and Strategies

This section expands on the toolset of coaches as well as competencies adapting tools to meet individual client needs, including cultural considerations. There is enhanced focus on using complex reflections and addressing nonverbal communication, as well as on recognizing and leveraging a client’s lived experiences and cultural identity.

  1. Ethics and Professional Practice

New competencies have been added for managing digital health platforms and disclosing the use of AI and emerging technologies, including detailed requirements for data security. This section also has enhanced focus on diversity, cultural humility, and equity and expands on what ongoing professional development should look like for a coach.

  1. Health and Wellness

Competencies have been added on healthy equity and disparities, structural and social determinants of health, and health literacy and numeracy. This section also expands on knowledge areas for chronic conditions including dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and substance use.

What does this mean for you? Even if you are not a board certified coach, these changes are indicative of wider trends in the industry and as such are relevant for all health coaches in growing their careers. Consider strategic upskilling in cultural humility, technology use in coaching, specific health knowledge areas, and creating tailored approaches for clients based on their lived experiences, preferences, and social context using a variety of frameworks and strategies.

If you’d like a behind the scenes perspective from two professionals in our field involved in the revision of the competencies, check out this conversation between Dr. Cherie O’Neill and Dr. Diego Salinas on LinkedIn.

And of course, the full updated competencies can be accessed on the NBHWC website here.
