I hear temps are getting cooler, but False Fall is the season here in Florida. I’ve been having a lot of conversations with my clients lately on how the seasonal changes impact their habits and goals and that seems to be a common theme this time of year.

I’ve also been having some conversations over on LinkedIn bringing more awareness to the disparities in coach compensation and I would love to have you add your expertise and experience to the conversation. My goal is to bring this topic into the spotlight in the space where employers and their representatives are hanging out to increase awareness - and your voice matters.

Industry Chatter

• The NBHWC Announces Leadership Changes and is searching for an Executive Director. I anticipate this will lead to continued advocacy for Category 1 CPT codes as well as deeper integration of the coach onto the healthcare team.

• The U.S. Army offers health coaching in its holistic approach to soldier health and wellbeing, expanding on the federal government’s use of Health Coaching beyond the VA.

• Coaching and hormonal health for midlife continues to expand and is making its way into corporate wellness. Keep an eye on this as a coaching specialization.

• WellSpark publishes data showing the success of its health coaching programs with a large regional health plan.

• ADHD Support and Awareness is growing, and health coaching is an important part of the care model. I’m seeing a lot of growth in ADHD coaching as a specialty.

• Wellness coaching is one of the top requested duties of personal trainers, and continuing education continues to expand to meet this need. This may be a way to further specialize and differentiate yourself as a HWC.

I came across a question on the /healthcoaching Reddit forum that I responded to, and thought it was worth sharing it here.

“I am on BetterUp, and I love this platform but I don't get enough clients on here to make enough. Does anyone know of other similar platforms?”

There is a common misconception, as exhibited by one of the other responses in the thread, that companies like BetterUp are the same as Thumbtack or Bark, but there are some considerable differences that are important for coaches to understand when seeking employment.

Thumbtack and Bark are marketplaces that connect service providers with customers directly. While they are not specifically focused on coaching, they do include coaching among the many services catered to. Typically, these platforms charge for marketing leads, which has historically made them a less favorable option for coaches seeking clients. Coaches often pay for leads that may not convert, and the platforms lack niche focus. These companies generate income from both service providers and service seekers looking for connections.

In contrast, BetterUp is a dedicated coaching company that provides EAP benefits to employers. They have a provider network of 1099 contract coaches that members can choose from as a part of their provided benefit. Coaches do not pay for leads because the company's revenue comes from B2B partnerships with employers who pay for coaching services for their employees. It can be competitive with a large provider pool, but there are strategies to make your profile stand out when employees search for support.

EAP coaching providers are increasingly becoming an industry standard, alongside therapy and telehealth services. Other examples include Spring Health and Maven. Some companies may cater to different populations such as students. For instance, TimelyCare partners with universities to provide coaching as a benefit for their students. Some of these companies may also provide benefits to health and insurance systems.

I see this trend paving the way for coaches to act as freelancers, potentially contracting with multiple companies to support a full-time caseload and income, possibly alongside some part-time W2 roles or their own private practice. One challenge, of course, is whether the compensation offsets self-employment taxes, with some companies offering better compensation than others.

Sometimes it can be difficult to determine in the application process whether a company has a provider network like this without direct experience or insight from someone who works there.
