Hi Coaches!
I’m blown away with how quickly the newsletter is growing - over 300 subscribers already in just a month! It may be a small number in the grand scheme, but it’s far exceeded my own expectations.
I recently attended the 2nd Annual Health and Wellbeing Coaching Conference by livestream and it was a fantastic learning and connection experience. I’ll be sharing some of my industry related takeaways later in this newsletter.
One of the highlights of the conference was William R. Miller’s session on MI, which was perfect timing for my own deep dive into the 4th Edition of Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change and Grow.
Thank you for being here! Leslie

‘Health & Coaching Adjacent Roles’ section added to the jobs. I’ve been noticing some roles lately that share skills with coaching and exist in the same spaces (some even requiring the NBHWC credential), even though they aren’t coaching roles. As I connect with other health coaches and learn more about what they are doing for work within and without coaching, I’ll also add similar roles.
Please be aware that there are individuals and entities perpetuating scams by fraudulently misrepresenting themselves as companies and recruiters. We also link to other job sites which we do not control or operate. At this time the Health Coaching Jobs Newsletter cannot verify the authenticity of job listings and we assume no liability over these job opportunities or the consequences of applying to them. We urge you to exercise caution in your job search and to not give out personal information before doing your own research.

Questions & Feedback
E-mail us or complete the survey found in each newsletter with your questions and suggestions. Thank you to everyone who has reached out!
“I am finding it very difficult to navigate getting a job without experience. Do you have any feedback, resources, or suggestions for additional training and licensure that are highly valued by employers in addition to the NBC-HWC credential?”
While there still isn’t a lot of standardization in what employers are looking for, there are several trends I’ve noticed so far:
A preference for a health or social services related degree is common. Don’t fret if you don’t have this - there are still plenty of roles that are flexible with required credentials.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a frequently required skill. The Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) offers excellent resources for ongoing MI education and practice, often with free training events.
Choosing a niche can be beneficial, even when working for a company rather than as a business owner. Many companies focus on specific health areas such as behavioral and mental health, functional medicine, sleep, pregnancy and postpartum, pediatrics, smoking cessation, diabetes, musculoskeletal health, menopause, and more. While not all roles in these areas require prior expertise, many prefer it. The most common niches I am seeing currently are diabetes, behavioral and mental health, and functional medicine.
When considering a niche, research available trainings or qualifications outside the coaching realm. For instance, if you’re interested in working in mental and behavioral health coaching, Mental Health First Aid could be a great addition to your skills.
Look for adjacent roles that utilize or can benefit from transferrable coaching skills even if they aren't dedicated coaching positions. These roles may be found in the same spaces as coaching positions, such as digital health companies, and can provide a foot in the door to the industry.
Industry Chatter
Takeaways from The Health & Wellbeing Coaching Conference
Health coaching is increasingly becoming a part of our social systems. The VA includes health coaching in its Whole Health well-being programs for veterans and offers an NBHWC-approved training program for employees. Mentor Agility, an ICF and NBHWC approved training program, has been recognized by the governor of Wyoming and the Wyoming Veterans Commission for its Veterans Talking to Veterans peer coaching program. Additionally, universities are increasingly incorporating health and wellness coaching into their student services.
A recurring theme at the conference was equity in and access to health coaching. Open Source Wellness (who is hiring) is a community based, equity driven coaching model showing significant wellbeing outcomes. They offer an NBHWC approved education program and even partner with innovative YMCAs. Cultural humility was also highlighted as an essential skill for coaches, especially as health coaching expands to more diverse groups. This is crucial, as the NBHWC's 2024 Annual Report shows that the majority of coaches are white (77%), women (86.7%), with a college degree. (87.2%).
Entrepreneurship is important to building a career as a health coach due to the lack of awareness about the profession and its impact, even as the industry grows. While some may recognize this trend through personal experience, confirmation from industry leaders is significant. Although awareness and adoption of health coaching services are increasing and the NBHWC has played a significant role in that trend, the profession still has a long way to go to be more integrated into our social systems. Much progress has also come from grassroots efforts by individuals and small organizations. With this in mind, the conference emphasized sharing our stories as coaches to spread awareness and learn from each other. How can we learn from one another to avoid reinventing the wheel? This is one question I hope to address as this newsletter continues to grow.
